Marfa honors “Giant” with artistic flair

Marfa, widely known for its hip and trendy arts community, has something sure to attract the eye of locals and tourists alike.

Driving on U.S. Highway 90 to about five miles west of town, many have gazed at the huge, two-dimensional sculptures depicting the classic Hollywood film, “Giant,” that was partly filmed in Marfa. Thanks to California based artist John Cerney, the small West Texas town can now show off murals depicting some of the characters of the film. Cerney started out creating portrait and pencil drawings for actors, directors, and producers for the Los Angeles television industry, and then later decided that creating and displaying public art was becoming increasingly important to him.

Cerney said his decision to choose “Giant” for his Marfa was due to the caliber of the Hollywood actors at the time.

“I’ve always been a James Dean fan, so that’s one of the reasons it was easy for me to choose that movie, because it was his last,” said Cerney. “That was the golden era of movies, and a giant story of Texas.”
