Museum transformation in the works

By January 2, 2020No Comments

Mary Bones has high hopes and ambitious plans for Museum of the Big Bend’s future, and as its director, she is leading the charge to transform the present facility into a significant cultural center in West Texas.

That transformation will include a brand new complex to be located on an empty lot northwest of the current museum, and a multi-purpose events center will sit at the heart of the planned expansion.

The historic building will still house the museum’s permanent exhibit, but with updates, and the now-temporary gallery will become a full-fledged map research facility housing the Davis map collection. A small, temporary gallery space will take over the current library for showing private collections held in the Big Bend community.

Said Bones, “I feel we’ve been remiss in sharing those. We will now have a space for the great collections out there, and we can start telling a larger story about the Big Bend.”
