Writer takes a snapshot of ranching women

Alyssa Banta is not only an award-winning photojournalist, but also a writer who enjoys documenting people’s lives.

Around 2010, Banta decided to take a completely different path. She went into the real estate business in her hometown of Fort Worth, where she focused on purchasing and renovating historic properties and leasing them. Banta’s book, “The Texas Ranch Sisterhood- Portraits of Women Working the Land,” documents in words and photos everyday life on a ranch. But more than that, it is an intimate portrait of women as they tackle various aspects of their lives. The book features several Big Bend area ranchers such as Fawn Kibbe of Alpine, Jean Anne Evans Fort of Alpine and Fort Davis, and Ann Daugherty from Marathon. Close friend and editor Sterry Butcher resides in Marfa.

Banta exclaimed, “I think the Big Bend area is an exquisite part of Texas. What’s more is that much of the ranching happens around the borderlands of Texas, with huge parcels of land.”

She summed it all up by noting, “I am a sentimental native Texan. I felt like I needed to get out of here and go and reconnect with Texas – with the land, the animals, the people.”
